Our most recent portraiture project was focused on colour, so I did some experiments in application and mixing and still came out with really saturated pieces. I didn't intend these to be three parts making one whole and I like them individually better than together. I like the green one best.

Using "Love" as a subject was one of the biggest mental challenges that I have faced in a long time. It forced me to take me work to a personal level I had never gone to before. I compiled memories that I felt marked my changing understanding of love and documented them in book that I bound myself. I have been thinking about graphic novels and illustration a lot, so I have a feeling this is the beginning of something continuous for me.

Maybe I need to get comfortable with putting my personal life into my art more, but for now

So other new year's resolutions seem to have taken precedence over my blogging in this year, but on the plus side, reading and guitar playing, among other activities, are on the up.

Drawing is something that has been happening too. This is the final result of the project introduced a few weeks ago, based off of the associations that I have made in my life to the music of Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers. That music is something I will never get over. The lyrics and the sounds are some of the best things I know. It took me a while to find the right format for this project, but I realised that tape cassettes had to be involved in some way, so their cases ended up becoming part of the drawing. I could go on about the contents of this drawing, but this has become perhaps the wordiest post I have ever made, and I would not fancy myself a writer.

Mentioned ages ago, this blog is named for one of my main life soundtracks and influences, Jonathan Richman.

There are just some things in life you will always go back to, no matter how much you think that they may be specific to one time period or aspect of your life, somehow the best things will pop in unexpectedly to remind you why you loved them in the first place and show you that they are even better than you thought before. That is the just magic of the best things.

So when looking for inspiration for new drawing assignments seems difficult, going back to the beginning proves to be just as good as ever. The beginning in this case was Jonathan and the Modern Lovers. It seems that every return brings new personal associations and hopefully this project will end up being a proper translation of that.

This is a preliminary sketch, which will likely have nothing to do with the end result, but it is hard to say as of yet.

Spontaneous cupcakes and coincidental radio moments make for magic snowy afternoons. These afternoons are the kinds that make you feel like you have achieved something despite having a medium sized to do list effectively being ignored. You need them though, to get through the rest of the less magical moments. Something is actually close to being (un)finished (according to the assignment) is this painting.

There are wreaths on the lamp posts on our street, I am five days from the end of my semester and still the pavement dares to show its ugly grey face. This joke is getting less funny by the day, so my roommate and I have taken action.

With the first real day of relief from academic coma land, all the ideas that have been itching me so persistently these last few weeks can start to be put into action. After about a half hour of searching through bolts of fabric, this amazing gold and brown rose print just fell right off the discount rack at only $4,00/m and into my overexcited hands. It was swiftly transformed in to a dress in 2.5 hours. Maybe adding some bows or straps yet though...

All 3 metres of fabric (still with plenty left over) plus closures, put me back $18.10. Money savin' skillz!

Also on along the rainy trek to Fabricville, the warm inside of H&M caught my eye and presented me with $10.00 shoes. You just can't say no to that.

It was an all around economical day.

Although we have yet to see any serious white flakes, all of the streets are aglow, in the traditionally early way, with yards of lights and bows and baubles. The realization that as soon as exams are over, there will be so little time to convert into the spirit of the season means that an extra level of preparations is now setting in. I decided to set up my lights in a less obvious way to alleviate that feeling of pending lists and receipts.

Meanwhile, this drawing has been inching along in comparison with my usual art-making speeds. It is shrinking in size so as to accommodate timelines but also for display purposes, which will hopefully lead to something complete and ultimately more successful.

Today ushers in the second half of the month along with a pending period of little sleep and plenty of books, not in the leisure sense. The next few weeks present hours filled with studying, essay writing and studio time. It would be nice if the weather would stop being so beautiful so that it wouldn't feel so bad to be inside all the time. It is about time for things outside to get absolutely disgusting and brutally cold before letting up for the perfect snowflakes.

Although it wasn't my home to come back to, there is still something comforting about a lawnful of red cups, ping pong balls and raucous cheering mid-afternoon. Elbow to elbow riot cops and monster horses patrolling the streets, not so much.

Meanwhile, my actual home is looking rather drippy and shiny, and I like that too. Brollies flock to the streets and turn people into struggling mushrooms.
Here's something I am working on for my painting class, I don't know where it's going yet, but I think I maybe know where it's coming from.
It has far to go. So has this semester. I thought it would race by, but September seems to have taken its time. Perhaps my insane obsession with a certain holiday at the end of October is rushing my expectations.

Today, while falling victim to the sight of the undeniably perfect bone structure of Zac Efron slathered in mud in the newest issue of Interview magazine, I came upon another article regarding the long lost member of the Culkin family circus, Kieran Culkin. He apparently has new movies coming out after a few years of hiatus from acting. He also happens to be filming one of these in Toronto along with a cast of charming young men. These are all exciting prospects since I enjoyed some of his earlier films. Also notable is his younger brother Rory, not only for his face.

The end of school was an occasion for celebration, but the end of big city life (for now at least) is slightly less inviting. Albeit, family and food were welcomed. Now that I have relocated to the nation's capital, I must go on a journey for employment and entertainment. I also need to find a way of uploading my photos without the help of a the handy SD slot in my printer. While current computing dilemmas may have brought photographic attempts to a standstill, help is on the way.

I just handed in my final paper of the year. With its delivery comes the satisfying end to a very successful first year of university. The city is now beckoning, movie theaters, concert halls and bars need to be filled with youth in celebration.
